Am I a ‘snob?’

“Am I a good person?” is the question the Doctor asks shortly after regenerating and becoming the 12th (or 13th?) version of the time traveler from Gallifrey.

It doesn’t take us long to learn that the Doctor of Doctor Who as portrayed by Peter Capaldi is a good person, albeit with a much more alien personality than many of his predecessors.

With that question resolved, I am dealing with the question of whether I’m a “snob.”

A special person in my life has accused me of being a “snob” and as a result not enjoying things she thinks I should enjoy.

“I’ve seen it,” she said.

I dispute her claim, however. Yes, I am not a fan of the “Star Trek Into Darkness” movie (even though I own it on Blu-ray), don’t like the Avengers movies nor the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie.

That, however, doesn’t make me a snob, just a person who knows what he likes and has some standards. If that makes me a snob, however, that wouldn’t make me a bad person.

One dictionary definition states that a snob is a person “who tends to rebuff, avoid, or ignore those regarded as inferior” or has “an offensive air of superiority in matters of knowledge or taste.”

I don’t fit that definition, at least in part. I’ve even gone out of my way to watch movies, TV shows and other things regarded by some as inferior. And in some cases, I’ve enjoyed the experience. As a matter of fact, I like the “X Men” movies and have enjoyed some of the “Captain America,” “Iron Man” and “Thor” movies.

What people who think I might be a snob are really saying is they disagree with my tastes and standards.

Some unenlightened people want nothing to do with science fiction, that they are above it. I clearly don’t think I’m above science fiction, having written this column for 7-1/2 years, continue to give presentations on the subject at libraries and being a lifelong enthusiast of SF.

What I don’t like is seemingly endless violence, crashes and explosions in films and the rip-off of old plots. What I prefer is usually something that has a bit more plot development, real character interaction, development of relationships and plots that aren’t totally predictable.

Having standards doesn’t make one a snob. It just means that that person knows what he wants to see, read or otherwise experience.

Am I a snob? I don’t think so.

An opportunity to disagree

If you disagree with my opinions, you can do that in person at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Martinsville branch of the Morgan County Public Library, 110 S. Jefferson, where I will be presenting my second “Science Fiction: Imagination, Fun and Intellect” presentation.

That presentation will include a couple of very unsnobbish videos I put together, a discussion of my exhibit at the library and a trivia contest with prizes, several of which are clearly unsnobbish.

Next Star Trek movie

I’ve expressed my disappointment on several occasions with the last “Star Trek” movie. I have hope, however, that won’t be the case with Star Trek 3 or 13 (depending on which numbering system you use).

On critic who agreed with me called the last one “a less-than-stellar, rather nonsensical remake of one of sci-fi’s greatest blockbusters.” He’s referring to the great  ”Wrath of Khan” being remade as “Into Darkness.”Star Trek Into Darkness poster

According to a press report, Justin Lin, the director of the next Star Trek movie, has said that when it is released in July 8, 2016, it will not only be an original story, but also offer brand new worlds and alien species.

That sounds like a place where no one has boldly gone before and I’d like to go.

P.S.

By the way, this wasn’t intended in any way to be critical of the special person I referred to in this piece. She’s a marvelous person, probably much wiser than me. I am lucky to have her in my life.
